Good to see a person with a disability being portrayed as a man of means, with a life, dating. The first few scenes allowed us to see his person before showing us his disability. That was great! Kudos to the script writer and director. I agree that that is Fortune’s norm. And just as others don’t have to provide a list of their body parts and abilities, people with disabilities shouldn’t have to either.
Society needs the collective growth to accommodate all kinds of abilities. If you went to a job interview and saw the boss in a wheelchair, you wouldn’t turn back on account of that. If the shopkeeper is deaf, it wouldn’t stop you from buying. Just be prepared to meet people of different abilities everywhere. Because just like you, they deserve to be everywhere. And if you meet such a person on a date, they have come as they are, just as you have come as you are. And no one needs to apologise for who they are. Just continue to be respectful and courteous on the date. And at the end of the date, you can tell them whether you would like to see them again or not.
Fortune possibly paid in advance for a reservation at a nice place. He was ready to treat his date well. Yes, I would be surprised. But it would not spoil the date for me. And I would be in agreement that that was his normal and he didn’t have to mention it in advance. I liked him enough on the phone to accept the date. And there is always the possibility that you might not like someone in real life whom you have only spoken to on the phone. But if I ever met a person like Fortune, he is certainly someone I would like to have as a friend, even if not in a relationship. Look at him – fine, obviously works out, has an above-average lifestyle, sounds intelligent, even sexy. May be a senior employee or business owner. He surely looks like someone I would like to get to know. But whether or not, I would be as respectful to him as I expect him to be to me.
This is an amazing movie. It deserves another viewing over and over again and again to remind us how wonderful life is period.
