Black superheroes might feel like they’re having a moment right now, but truth is—they’ve been here all along. At Comic Power, where we shine a spotlight on the legends, pioneers, and game-changers in comic book culture. 🖤 The problem was they didn’t always get the same love, exposure, or respect as their white counterparts. This countdown sets the record straight.
In this video, I’m breaking down the Top 10 Black Superheroes of All Time. These are the heavy hitters—the characters who’ve been around long enough to prove their staying power, inspire generations of fans, and push the culture forward.
From Black Panther’s groundbreaking debut in the 1960s, to Storm becoming Marvel’s first major Black female superhero, to Spawn rewriting the rules for creator-owned comics in the 1990s, this list is packed with icons. Each of these characters has stood tall not just as superheroes, but as symbols of representation, power, and possibility.
This video isn’t about temporary race-swaps or half-hearted attempts at “diversity.” It’s about the originals—the characters that were conceived from the beginning as Black and who have carved out their rightful place in comic book history.
🔥 CRITERIA FOR THE LIST
Legacy Heroes Only – They must have existed for at least 10 years.
Born Black – No retroactive race changes or “swaps.”
Personal Picks – This is my list, based on influence, longevity, and cultural impact. Agree or disagree? Let me know your Top 10 in the comments.
🌍 Marvel & DC Rule… But Not Exclusively
Yes, Marvel and DC dominate the superhero landscape, but they’re not the only names on the list. I made sure to include one of the most important indie superheroes of all time: Colonel Al Simmons, aka Spawn. Spawn wasn’t just a comic—he became a phenomenon. Created by Todd McFarlane in the 1990s, Spawn helped blaze a path for independent creators while standing as one of the darkest and most memorable Black characters in comics.
🎯 WHY THIS LIST MATTERS
Representation is not just a buzzword—it’s fuel for the imagination. These superheroes gave Black readers characters they could truly see themselves in, decades before Hollywood even considered it. They weren’t sidekicks. They weren’t stereotypes. They were leaders, icons, and game-changers.
Now, as the MCU and DCEU dominate pop culture, the seeds planted by these legacy characters are finally bearing fruit. Without Storm, would audiences be ready for Shuri? Without Static Shock, would Miles Morales have exploded the way he did? This list is about remembering the foundation that made today’s diversity possible. ⚡

STORM is ALWAYS my FAVORITE!
? Cyborg #8 You Wilding Sun Son…. At least top 5…😅
Definitely think Icon should have also been highlighted
Honorable mention to Icon & Rocket.
I love the list and can’t argue with the number one pick but no honorable mention for my guy Icon from DC
1:05 Yeah….aaaaaand….the writers keep calling her Black Wonder woman… and DC keeps selling her as the Black Wonder Woman….
But we are weird for noticing?
Black Volcan was all over the 70s
Only professional victims care about the race of a superhero. You people are absolutely what is absolutely disgusting in this country. You people claim to have built the world then claim to be oppressed. Get an education, learn history and STFU already. We're over it.

No Night Thraher, huh?
There are a lot more black heroes than most people realize
@8:25 I have the 4 mini series Mosaic comics. I bought them back in 2021 and still ah ent opened them.
@14:25 I have a couple of the Spawn comics too 😂 I also bought the Spawn and Violator skins in Call Of Duty a couple years back 😂
I think that Storm was well cast in the films, but her character was not given the appropriate shine. If they'd had proper plans going in, and given the actresses with their characters holding focus we'd be speaking differently about them.
Any word on Evan Daniels (SPIKE), Storm's nephew?
I can't believe how long it took DC to give us Black Characters. I can't prove it but I created Black Characters in 1964, even beating Black Panther. But i never went anywhere and I only wrote stories in school. I not only created Billy Ray aka Darkray aka Night Runner, but also his younger sister Kelly Ray. I later created Thundaro. Inspired by Black Lightning but also flies and has super strength.
Just get someone else to play him white peoples do it all the time. What's so hard about that and why do we have whites saying who should and not play Blackpanther. Thers no problem when they switch up Superman, batman and other all the THEY could have gotten many black actors
Making a mention for Prodigy originally from Academy X/The New X-Men.
Here's my Top 10 (not necessarily MY faves; just who I think are the greatest). 10-3 were tough to choose, but the Top 2 were easy choices for me:
10. Monica
9. Cage
8. Bishop
7. War Machine
6. Blade
5. Spawn
4. Cyborg
3. Stewart
2. T'Challa
1. Storm
Static and Miles are very popular, but the others on my list have been around FAR longer, yet have STILL stood the test of time, even through changing tastes over the decades.
BLADE SHOULD HAVE BEEN TOP THREE JUST BECAUSE OF THE IMPACT & THE BIRTH OF THE MCU & PROVING WITH THREE SEQUELS THAT SUPERHERO MOVIES CAN BE SUCCESS AS R-RATED FILM.
Making Falcon a race swap Cap was always a terrible idea. 🤦🏾♂️
