Take "Crimson Tide" as an example of story structure. Since I watched the film, I can give you the 5-part story schematic….
Exposition: The SSBN Alabama is ordered to go to Russia because a rebel Russian took over a Federation-owned sub base that has nuclear missiles and threatened to use its missiles on the USA and Japan.
Rising Action: The SSBN Alabama has the first skirmish with the enemy hunter-killer sub, the Acula – gets almost hit with one enemy torpedo but survives, but the USA military DEFCON is dropping down from 3 to 2, and eventually to 1.
Climax: The Alabama confronts the Acula again and sinks it – but the Alabama gets nearly direct-struck by Acula's revenge shot torpedo and almost got hull-crushed; in the meantime, one sub commander is placed under arrest for breaking protocol on sub nuke missile release. The sub eventually escapes torpedo damage and can resurface again.
Falling action: The Alabama now tries to get a radio message that was cut off during the first attack – does it mean it has to launch its nukes out of the water? At the same time, both sub commanders fight against each other about launching the nukes again.
Denouement: The radio message is confirmed – the Alabama is ordered to stand down its nukes, and word got out that the hijacked Russian sub base is now back in Federated Russia's hands again, and rebel enemy forces down there surrender. Time for the sub to go back home!
