They might be getting chased by Schons right after they met along the way (Due to this, the five took a detour). Schons perhaps got caught off or triggered when those five are noisy while they were passing through. He killed one and disposed of the body through the bridge, and that is why his car's fuel ran out.
Shonez killed them because he was drunk and thought the boys were following him. You started saying that as soon as I started typing it.
Maybe he was vomiting because of alcohol not because of health problems.

Isn’t there a connection between Schons and one of the men through his daughter? It just feels like he hunted them… or in some strange twist of fate, the five men ended up in their car behind him… but that is kinda unrealistic… so weird…. Just received Tony Wright’s book… looking forward to reading it.
I can clearly imagine a drunken Schons road rage incident where he scared the young men badly enough for them to run away from their vehicle. The fact that they didnt hide for awhile & come back msy mean Schons chased them on foot also. Hiw they got on that road to begin with is harder. I guess they just missed their turn. No matter what, i am sure Schons was the reason for the hasty departure from the vehicle.
I've heard and read dozens of explanations for what happened, mainly in the content and comments of numerous YT videos that have sprung up over the last 15 years or so, and it seems that people draw on 6 basic ideas, which can be combined in any number of ways to provide an explanation: (1) Took a wrong turn and got lost, (2) Were being chased (or thought they were) and took evasive action, (3) Matthias had a relapse of some kind and became a malevolent influence, (4) Schons played a more belligerent role than he has let on, (5) Victims of a roadside scam (someone pretending to need help), (6) Had some secret destination in mind. Most explanations seem to draw on one or more of these 6 ideas.
He said a few times he was yelling for help and was mad that they left him there. Don't think anyone's considered but I think it's entirely possible they left her car to go get him help. He's just distorting what exactly happened in Timeline because he was having a mild heart attack and was confused. That would be a good reason for them to leave their car

First: Man visits 2 bars and says he only had 1 beer?? If he said one in each bar, i could maybe believe him, but if he visited 2 bars and said he only had one beer, i wouldnt believe him anymore. I feel like the first time he tells the story is the most relevant6. He most likely made himself look the best possible just incase "I wasnt drunk at all, only had one b eer, half a beer in the first bar and finished it in the second! Come on, its completely believable!!"
second: No matter what happened, if he had absolutely no contact with the guys, he would have no reason to lie about almost anything. Like "yea, i had few beers, passed out when my car got stuck, woke up later and noticed the other car stuck, tried to go overthere but had a heart attack!!" or something on those lines.

Regarding the reason the Yuba 5 were in that area to begin with – neurodivergent people, perhaps especially when in groups, can do things that really don't make sense to others. What seems illogical or irrational to some, may make complete sense to them. Peripherally, it can be extremely dangerous for them to encounter law enforcement, as law enforcement training is generally way behind the curve of psychology, and involves manipulation tactics.
What if the perpetrator left the flashlight and blanket? They were up there spying on the survivors. What if gary was murdered and never made it to the trailer? Maybe the reason no fire was made was bc he was there alone and he couldnt walk. He got himself as many cans as he could and then he couldnt anymore. But how did he eliminate waste? None was found. And no water was found either.
