Height and eye colour and nose shape and blood grouping are all characters.
A specific heritable variant of a character is what is called a trait. Tallness or dwarfness is a trait but height as a general category is not a trait. It is rather a character. Think of character as a box that contains dogs. But if you open the box you would get either a male or female. So sex is a character but male for example is a trait.
