With the second highest death-toll of all African conflicts, the Nigerian Civil war (also known as the Biafran war) is perhaps the single most significant event in Nigerian history.
This video is our attempt to shed light on this 3 year conflict, which claimed the lives of over 100,000 soldiers and an estimated 2 million civilians as the Nigerian government led by General Yakubu Gowon fought to prevent the secession of the self-proclaimed Republic of Biafra which was led by General Chuckwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu.

The Nigerian civil war is infinitely more complex than can be explained in a 45 minute video. What we've tried to do here is to give the "bare bones" of the conflict and also leave viewers with some food for thought about Nigeria's future. We would have loved to make the video much longer and explain all the intricacies but we were financially constrained. We hope you can all appreciate the effort that has gone into this work and use this as a springboard into further research about the Biafran War.
very interesting content thank you
God bless Africa
I love this video
Very original and true
Had Biafra succeeded, it obviously would have been one of the most prosperous and developed countries in the African continent and possibly the world. The intellectuals in that Biafra was something else.
However, now in 2025, I must categorically say that that Biafra is not the same with Nnamdi Kanu's Biafra. The ideologies and pattern are completely different.
What I believe now is the complete restructuring of this country. The Nigeria like it is presently structured will not work.
Yakubu Gowon, a war criminal
There's a lot of misinformation and sentiments in the post. The author made it looked like the Biafrans are the victims. Not taking into account that it is the deep rooted hatred the Igbos hold against Hausas and the greed to control regions and resources that didn't belong to them that derives their motives.
Till this day they've been spreading lies and hatered from generation to generation, all they want is to is the extinction of the Hausa race
The irony of life. Look at General Gowon's life and the fate of his people in the Middle Belt region of Nigeria.
Over 2 million people of the region have been displaced and are living in the IDP camps (internally displaced people). Who would have thought that the people who headed an army 🪖 to "stop" and deny the people of Biafra freedom are currently being besieged by the Nigerian Army 🪖.
Please, post more videos 🙏🙏🙏
I'm in tears 😢😢😢
My Igbo brothers and sisters it shall be well
Apt, and engaging. Thank you for putting this piece together. African stories needs to be told authentically as possible, and that's why we just created the Africa vs The West channel to give a true comparison between life in Africa and the West.
If it was up to me, as a Nigerian living in Nigeria. It would be better for this to happen again, because RN we are going through major terrorism in the north. The northerners are killing Christmas which are mostly Igbos. And tensions between the ethnic groups are rising. To me it would be better for the Igbos to separate from Nigeria again and form their own country
Wow! They spoke English so well!!
I will never understand Nigeria and Nigerians obsession with sharing the same country with Igbo people. God i really wish Biafra would succeed again honestly cause Nigeria as of 2026 is a complete mess. We are too different to share a country, there is nothing like one Nigeria. I really hope Igbo people in different parts of this country will start thinking home, invest in South East, bring your businesses in South East, Biafra would come easily. Aku luo ulo, these people are not your brothers, we are all we have got. It's okay to not be one country. You can't build a nation with people that doesn't share the same ideology with you. They openly kill you, accuse you of everything, trying to earase you, say that an Igbo man will never be president, take you out of major country roles, marginalize you and all. I know you don't support the current method of agitation, I don't as well but then again we can't continue like this, we all need to come together and actually fight for us. Umunne m biko❤
This videos should be played in our university classroom instead of the lecturers teaching it.. I understand it better here.
It was actually the Hausas that called for equality and inclusiveness from the start, the Igbos were tribalistic and even went on to exhibit that in the coup.

I’m here in 2026 and I’ve been reading books on Nigeria history since JSS1. Sadly our schools only teach world history which doesn’t directly correlate with me. I read 2 books “Last Card” and “Half a Yellow Sun” and I’ve been in awe of Biafra since then. The fact that they could stand their ground for 3YRS!! without firearms and effective training is amazing. It’s quite disheartening how the South-east provides 78% of the Nigerian budget in terms of agriculture, Oil and Gas, Industrialization and Education but they still get allocated way less. It’s cheating in every sense. I was born in 2007 and so far I’ve only experienced 3 presidents and the best was Goodluck Ebele Jonathan and his life was threatened that’s why he refused to go for a second term. Since he served his tenure in 2015 Nigeria has been going on a downward spiral. In 2026 I can’t believe what this country has become. If Biafra had seceded maybe we’d be a sovereign recognized state and now we’re being killed again by the northerners. They come into our farms and kill the people in our villages then set it on fire. I hope we finally secede
I didn't know that the ethnic situation was this bad then!
Black man sounds very intelligent and fluently speaking nice 👍🏼 12:25 interview
Our former leaders sound so much like Europeans 😂
Proudly IGBO
The enemy of my enemy is my friend.
Wise choice by the Igbo General to "side" with France.
I love Igbo history.

I can’t believe I’m crying right now 😢
My parents told me how they hide inside a well and how they struggled to survive. Asin still yet northerners still Dey lead us. 😂
